Europe Under Refugee Crisis

Refugees are a natural consequence of war; indeed, there has seldom been a war without civilians trying to flee from its carnage. But what causes the wars? In some cases, demands for regime change. After all, the regimes being overthrown are often brutal, and unlikely to back down without a fight.

Syrian people are the one have faced this case in recent years. This circumstances pushed them to flee from their mother lands to seek shelter from neighbouring countries. As a matter of fact more than four million refugees of the Syrian Civil War have left the country during the course of the war. Most of them fled to neighbouring Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq, while thousands also ended up in more distant countries of the Caucasus, the Persian Gulf, North Africa. The refugee crisis began in 2011, when thousands of Syrian citizens fled across the border to neighbouring Turkey and Lebanon. Then it spread widely all nations.

Europe was strongly faced this refugee crises in the third quarter of 2015. Almost 200 Hundred Thousand Syrian people walked through Europe for a hope. But there were many other difficulties were waiting them at the each gate of European Countries.

PI (Formerly known as ADCD) has invited Ms Susanna Cheung to understand the recent facts in Europe. Ms Cheung is back from Europe bringing stories on the recent refugee crisis which Europe is now facing. The speaker tries to discuss with the audience the root of this crisis and its impact on Europe.

Ms. Cheung is a Hong Kong based veteran journalist, having worked for BBC World Service, Inter Press Service, Hong Kong Economic Times, Asia Weekly and Modern Media. She is now a columnist for Hong Kong Economic Times and public affairs programme host with DBC radio, regular commentator on international affairs for Radio TV Hong Kong ( RTHK ). She also writes for magazines and newspapers in mainland China.

Since the year of 1999, Cheung has focused on international affairs. She has been to several news hot spots to do stories which include the democratic transformation of eastern Europe, unarming of Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, movement on independence in East Timor, crisis in Kosovo, escape of living Budda from Tibet, Afghanistan under Taliban regime , conflicts in the Middle East region, 21st century socialist revolution in Latin America, and Arab spring .

In her professional career more than 20 years, she has managed to get exclusive interviews with world leaders, ie, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat ( 2002 ), ex-president of Venezuela Hugo Chavez ( 2008 ), founding President of East Timor Xanana Cusmao ( 2002 ), and Prince of Cambodia Norodom Ranariddh ( 1998 ) ,His Holiness Dali Lama ( 1996 ), ex-philippine president Fidel Ramos ( 2001 ).

Cheung is the author of five books based on her past reporting experiences. The latest book is on European debt crisis and Arab Spring.

She has obtained Human rights Press Award ( special journalistic courage ) from Amnesty International HK ( violence in East Timor 1999 ), Feature Story Award from the Society of Publishers in Asia SOPA ( Israeli –Palestinian conflict 2007 ), and the Best Book of the Year from China Times, Taiwan ( the Middle East Frontlines 2006 ), Hong Kong Book Award ( the Road to Latin America 2009 ).

Cheung was educated both in London and Hong Kong with M.phil in Sociology.
